Little Flower Social Concerns Committee
The Social Concerns Committee meets periodically throughout the year to discuss and implement outreach projects to assist our community. Food Collection is an ongoing program throughout the year and assists our local food banks and parishes that provide warm meals to members of the community. Volunteers are essential to the success of our programs and we welcome our parishioners to be involved.
MEALS FOR THE HOMELESS
Every first Sunday of the month, food is collected and brought to Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Bethesda, Maryland. This food helps serve over 75 people in our community. Little Flower Parish has been contributing meals since 2001. PLEASE CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP TO PROVIDE A FOOD DONATION.
FOOD FOR THE POOR
Food is collected every first Sunday and is picked up from the Church by SOME and Our Lady Queen of Peace. There is not only a need for food, but also Giant and Safeway Gift Cards, so as to care for families with infants in need of perishable food and dairy products. The food is equally divided between the two organizations.
SCHOOL SUPPLIES COLLECTION
The collection begins in the month of August. School supplies are collected for children (grades K-8) attending Sacred Heart School in Northwest Washington, D.C. Donations are greatly appreciated.
Coats will be collected in the month of October and distributed to those in need in our community.
Food is collected during the first two weeks of November and a bulletin notice will appear the end of October. Gift cards from local grocery stores and non-perishable food will be collected and distributed to the Community of Hope project located in the Adams Morgan neighborhood of Washington, D.C. This non-profit program provides direct services in housing, healthcare and educational support to homeless and low-income families in our community.
Volunteers sign up in early November before and after Mass in the vestibule. Cooked turkeys are collected the Saturday before Thanksgiving and distributed to Martha’s Table. Last year, over 120 turkeys were provided from Little Flower parish to this organization. Martha’s Table is grateful for the Parish’s contribution to this special meal that feeds over 1500 members in need in our community.
THE CHRISTMAS GIVING TREE
This project was started over seventeen years ago and continues to be a major source of gifts for those in need in the Archdiocese of Washington. Trees are decorated with tags and are located in the back of the Church. Parishioners are encouraged to take a tag from the trees which list a child’s age and donate a new age appropriate toy for that child. This project begins the end of November and ends the second week of December. Toys are then collected and distributed to Queen of Peace Parish, Assumption Parish, Catholic Charities and the Spanish Catholic Center.
ARCHDIOCESE OF WASHINGTON FOOD DRIVE
This drive is held in January by the Archdiocese of Washington. Brown grocery bags are distributed to both the Parish and its school to collect non-perishable food. Food will be distributed to those in need throughout the Archdiocese of Washington.
