Confirmation

Preparation for Confirmation at Little Flower Parish

Confirmation is the sacrament that completes our initiation into the Church, the Body of Christ. It is generally received after Baptism and Holy Eucharist. This is the point when we are “sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit”.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church states, “The effect of the sacrament of Confirmation is the full outpouring of the Holy Spirit as once granted to the apostles on the day of Pentecost. From this fact, Confirmation brings an increase and deepening of baptismal grace:

  • it roots us more deeply in the divine filiation which makes us cry, "Abba! Father!";
  • it unites us more firmly to Christ;
  • it increases the gifts of the Holy Spirit in us;
  • it renders our bond with the Church more perfect;
  • it gives us a special strength of the Holy Spirit to spread and defend the faith by word and action as true witnesses of Christ, to confess the name of Christ boldly, and never to be ashamed of the Cross” (1302-1303)

In the Archdiocese of Washington, Confirmation preparation takes place during 7th-8th grade, and youth are confirmed near the end of their 8th grade year. (Special arrangements are made for older youth or adults.)

To fully prepare for Confirmation, each Confirmation Candidate needs a thorough understanding of the basic teachings of the Catholic Faith and the sacrament of Confirmation.

Young people must be supported in this process of preparation by their families, and they should be practicing their faith actively as well as attending the required courses.
